Alan Kay vs. Debbie Downer
admin | April 9th, 2007 | programmingRecently some of the reading and listening I’ve done regarding the state of programming languages has reminded me of the interview with Alan Kay from ACM Queue in 2004/2005. Be forwarned, the interview was a little depressing for me, but I don’t know that much about the state of computer sciece, so you can be the judge. Kay’s accolades alone in his field, made me want to buy a noose and call my accomplishments worthless. It’s a good read though, so enjoy!

Why did you bring up that article. I remember reading that a few years ago, and I also got depressed.
Curious though, from what I remember about the article he was heavily bashing the lack of new languages. I wonder if the craziness that Mr. Martin Fowler is pushing right now with his compiler-compilers is the direction more people need to start heading?

For those who are interested Martin Fowler has been writing about compiler-compilers in his Bliki. For instance the article he wrote about EmbedmentHelper.
